TripAdvisor Autocomplete API
Returns TripAdvisor typeahead matches for a name: location id, place name, locality subtitle, coordinates, thumbnail, and the page URL to chain from.
GET /v1/tripadvisor/autocompleteLast updated November 2026Maintained by the SocialCrawl team
When to use the TripAdvisor Autocomplete API
Use it to turn a name someone typed into a real place. It carries no rating or review count, so use search when you need those.
From the API reference
Type-ahead lookup for TripAdvisor destinations, hotels, restaurants, and attractions. Returns a unified PlaceList with the resolved location id, name, locality subtitle (e.g. 'Ile-de-France, France'), coordinates, thumbnail, and the TripAdvisor URL to chain into /v1/tripadvisor/place or /v1/tripadvisor/reviews. Best for turning a name a user typed into a concrete place. Note this lane carries NO star rating and NO review count - use /v1/tripadvisor/search when you need those on every result.

What can you do with the Autocomplete API?
The Autocomplete endpoint gives you structured TripAdvisor data with computed fields in a single request. No scraping infrastructure to build or maintain.
Example Request
# GET /v1/tripadvisor/autocomplete: 1 credit per call. Cache hits are free and failed calls are refunded.
# Check the price first for 0 credits: add dry_run=1 to the query. Nothing is fetched or charged.
# --max-time 60: the API's own time limit for this endpoint.
# --retry 3: retries timeouts, 429 and 5xx, honoring Retry-After.
# -o response.json keeps only the final attempt's body.
# One Idempotency-Key per request, reused on every retry, so a retried call is never charged twice.
IDEMPOTENCY_KEY=$(od -An -N16 -tx1 /dev/urandom | tr -d ' \n')
